Supporting Individuals with Autism in Physiotherapy Settings

This training session is a special partnership with the Canucks Autism Network focused on how to better treat clients with developmental delays. While the title is physiotherapy specific the content is applicable to many roles. Any Kinesiologists, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists or others who do session based work with clients will find the information appropriate.
The cost of the session is $25.00 to register before February 15th. Participants will receive a session workbook and a certificate of attendance for continuing education.
The content includes an overview of the characteristics of autism and an introduction to a range of practical strategies for supporting individuals on the autism spectrum in physiotherapy settings. Attendees will build the confidence and skills to enhance their communication, increase predictability and structure, use visual supports, increase positive behaviour, and provide support during difficulty.
Topics covered will include:
- Learning about different communication techniques for focus on task
- Learning more about non-verbal communication
- Organizing/structuring sessions
- Increasing predictability
- Using visual supports
- Providing support during difficulty
This training is a special project spearheaded by one of the Kid’s Physio volunteers, in attempt to making a more inclusive space for us to care for all patients!
