Title: Thinking Critically and Pragmatically About Practice with Parents of Children with Neurodisabilities: Research as a Bridge?
Dr. Lach started her career as a social worker in paediatric neurology at the Hospital for Sick Children. Her program of research has been driven by questions that emerged from her practice and documents quality of life, parenting, and social determinants of health among children with neurodisabilities (i.e. cerebral palsy, global development delay, autism spectrum disorder) and their families. Dr. Lach uses both quantitative and qualitative methods and has been funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and Kids Brain Health Network (KBHN). Her more recent projects focus on developing and evaluating interventions that are informed by her earlier work. Dr. Lach is committed to designing, implementing, and sharing research findings with parents, practitioners, managers, and policy-makers. This presentation will provide a snapshot of her work and will cover the following topics:
1. Parenting a child with a neurodisability – does it differ and if so, in what way?
2. How do the support needs of parents of children with neurodisabilities differ across the developmental trajectory into young adulthood?
3. Designing a program for and with parents of children with neurodisabilities and emotional/behavioural dysregulation.
After her presentation Dr Lach will be available to meet with attendees. She is interested in knowing whether this resonated, whether there are synergies and opportunities for future engagement and collaboration.
