Description

The Down Syndrome Resource Foundation (DSRF) has an opportunity for a talented Speech-Language Pathologist with a passion for making a difference in the lives of children with developmental disabilities and their families.

Commencement date: as soon as a qualified candidate is found.

The Down Syndrome Resource Foundation was formed in 1995 and has an established history with a strong reputation for excellence. The DSRF offers a level of Down syndrome expertise unmatched in Canada. The mission is to support people living with Down syndrome and their families with individualized and leading-edge educational programs, health services, information resources, and rich social connections so each person can flourish in their own right. The outcomes for individuals with Down syndrome can be maximized by providing opportunities for rich social connections with family and friends, participation in the community, optimal health care, as well as the opportunity to learn through instruction that is tailored to the profile of the learner.

The DSRF offers a dynamic working environment where all members of our team problem-solve together to create the best possible outcomes for the children and adults we serve. Our collaborative, interdisciplinary team offers speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, positive behaviour support, mental health services, comprehensive sexual education and one-to-one academic programs for students of all ages, as well as small group adult programs for students transitioning from high school.

Qualifications

  • A Registered Speech-Language Pathologist (Master’s degree)
  • Registered with the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC
  • Experience in pediatric Speech-Language Pathology

Responsibilities

  • Provide weekly individual therapy to individuals with Down syndrome.
  • Assist in the transfer of skills into the classroom, community, and home environments via mentoring parents and other team members.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Therapy, Behaviour and Family Support and Senior S-LP to ensure quality and effective programming.
  • Present to parents and professionals in the community on various speech and language topics.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You are interested in continual learning, the ability to be creative and innovative, and a positive, energetic personality are key attributes that you bring to the position.
  • You especially enjoy people of all ages with developmental disabilities and use a play-based approach to learning.
  • You are comfortable collaborating with families.
  • You create a fun and friendly environment in your therapy sessions and appreciate the small gains that lead to success over time.

Clinical Environment

The DSRF clinic is often a busy environment, with many families having appointments simultaneously. Group classes are also taking place throughout the year. Each therapist and teacher has an office space with a closed door. Therapy sessions are provided in person, or online via telehealth. Moderate physical effort is required throughout the day: therapists follow students’ lead in terms of level of physical play, and location of activities (at the table, on the floor, in the gym etc.).

Diversity & Inclusion

To be a diverse and inclusive workplace that is representative (at all levels) of the people we serve, DSRF welcomes and encourages applications from anyone who identifies as Indigenous, LGBTQ2S+, a member of a visible minority population, and persons with disabilities. If you are a member of any of these groups and wish to contribute to furthering DSRF’s mission, DSRF encourages you to self-identify in your application, cover letter or resume.

Compensation

The salary is based upon a 37.5-hour work week and is $75,000.00 to $85,000.00, commensurate with experience as an S-LP in a similar role.

How to Apply

The DSRF will invite qualified candidates for interviews, potentially followed by a working interview that involves observation of clinical sessions if the candidate does not have substantial experience with students with Down syndrome. Interested candidates, please forward your resume and cover letter to Senior SLP Marla Folden at marla@dsrf.org.

The DSRF team is a close-knit group of professionals who are proud of what they do and their organization. For more information on working at DSRF, please visit the website and view the employees’ video.
